CHAPTER 5

The next morning was just as you’d expect when staying with people who aren’t quite family or strangers. It began with breakfast and ended with us popping our bags in the backseat of the Kingswood before another round of hugs signaled the end of our stay. The most solemn part of the moment came just before I wished Barbara goodbye when I asked her the location of Penny’s grave.

“She’s resting over at Sunrise Views Cemetery,” was what she whispered to me before Roger added directions for us.

“You would have passed it on your way in. You’ll see it on the western side of the road about three miles out of town. The entrance is down near the gully but the road winds up onto the hill where the view is definitely one to die for,” he told us and he wasn’t wrong.

When Sam and I reached the sign with the arrow pointing up the dark, tree-lined laneway leading into the place, it quickly became obvious that this was a place chosen with purpose. The higher the road led us, the more of the valley below came into view each time the trees parted enough to share the scenery until we eventually broke through into a clearing at the very top.

Sam parked the car at the closest end to the entrance gates and when I climbed out, I paused long enough to take in the view which improved even more once we walked into the cemetery itself. Rows of graves sat like steps on the hillside, each holding perhaps two dozen sites for the town’s resting souls. Before them stretched the endless view of the ocean, the constant waves offering a spectacle worthy of standing the test of time.

We slowly made our way down the path cutting through the very middle and upon reaching Row 8, I stopped to look at Sam while taking a deep breath that he understood immediately.

“Why don’t I give you a moment alone,” he said with a smile, kissed my cheek, and continued on down to the older part of the yard where I knew he would take in the history of the place.

I could feel the beating in my chest picking up considerably with each step as I began to work my way along the row looking for the gravestones identifying Penny’s. Each time my eyes fell on the name, my heart skipped a beat as the anticipation continued building, dreading the moment I found the right one that would conclusively prove that this wasn’t some morbidly realistic nightmare. A breeze picked up, the nearby trees rustling to life as I continued on until the weight in my stomach finally dropped to the floor.

As much as I assumed it would be, seeing her name wasn’t the worst of it. What struck me the hardest as I stood before the marker and stared down at the confirmation this was actually happening was seeing the date of birth just below Penny’s name, the date of birth she shared with me, and now reminded me that death really did come for us all.
